Enjoying East African Waters & Food from the Sea

I was chatting with my cousin a couple of days ago when she asked me, “You are not tired of water yet? Don’t you like live by the ocean?", after I had told her just how much I enjoy the view of Lake Victoria from this lovely B & B in Kampala. I understood where she was coming from—she’s not the first person to ask me this—but the truth is: no, I don’t tire of water. As I responded to her then, “Lakes are so different from the ocean. Oceans differ from each other". What is constant about most bodies … Continue reading

Eating & Travelling Across East Africa

Hi, you. How are you today? I hope you are well. Today, let’s get a little visual. I’d like to take you through a picture show. A picture show of what? Without further ado, here goes…. No. 29: Kafunda, Nairobi You know there’s got to be something special about this hole-in-the-wall bar in Hurlingham, Nairobi for word of it to reach … Continue reading

Ras Kutani, Kigamboni, Tanzania & 39 Other “Summer" Photos Taken in Tanzania

Summer in the Northern Hemisphere coincides with peak travel season in Tanzania. This “summer"—I put that in quotes because it wasn’t actually summer in Tanzania but rather some of our cooler months—I did my fair share of traveling and exploration because my brother was visiting from the U.S., and I wanted to show him all the best that the country had to offer. We discovered some beautiful places in Dar es Salaam where I live—you will see many pictures of the Protea Hotel Dar es Salaam Amani Beach in this post—but we also took a 3-week road trip that took … Continue reading

Travelers Lodge Bagamoyo & Other Places to Visit in the Historical Town of Bagamoyo

When you think of travel in Tanzania, you probably think of places like Ngorongoro, the Serengeti, and Zanzibar. Today, I would like to tell you about a historical little town, not far from Dar es Salaam called Bagamoyo. A Bit About Bagamoyo Bagamoyo, located 61 kilometers northeast of Dar es Salaam, is often incorrectly called the first capital of Tanzania. Although this is not correct, Bagamoyo got this reputation because it was the capital of colonial German East Africa, which consisted mainly of present-day mainland Tanzania, but also included present-day Rwanda and Burundi. Today, Bagamoyo is a a sleepy, slow town … Continue reading
