As I was moving to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania many years ago, I remember reading in The Rough Guide to Tanzania that Dar es Salaam was “the best place in East Africa for catching live music”. Many years later, I can’t quite say whether or not I agree with that statement, but what I do know is that there are ample opportunities in Dar es Salaam to listen to good live music. One such opportunity is Wikiendi LIVE which happens every couple of months at the Nafasi Art Space in Mikocheni. Before I tell you what I enjoy about Wikiendi … Continue reading Weekend Cultural Event: Wikiendi Live is Back!
It’s that time again: time for a little show and tell. What should you expect to see this time? Lots and lots of pictures of food across the region, pictures of Zanzibar—it seems it’s Zanzibar season in my life because I’ve been to Zanzibar not once but twice since the pictures from my last Instagram recap post—and unexpectedly, quite a few pictures of me, some even with friends and family. Without further ado, here goes…. Summer in the Northern Hemisphere coincides with peak travel season in Tanzania. This “summer”—I put that in quotes because it wasn’t actually summer in Tanzania but rather some of our cooler months—I did my fair share of traveling and exploration because my brother was visiting from the U.S., and I wanted to show him all the best that the country had to offer. We discovered some beautiful places in Dar es Salaam where I live—you will see many pictures of the Protea Hotel Dar es Salaam Amani Beach in this post—but we also took a 3-week road trip that took … Continue reading Ras Kutani, Kigamboni, Tanzania & 39 Other “Summer” Photos Taken in Tanzania
Last week, my phone was blowing up with pictures and videos from Business Class on one of Emirates’ A380 flights. I was GREEN with envy! The culprit was my youngest brother, who on a trip to Mauritius, not only flew on an Emirates A380 aircraft, which happens to be the largest passenger airliner in the world, but also got bumped up to Business Class on one of the flights there. Upon his return to Dar es Salaam, as you can only imagine, I could not hear the end of it! He kept using words like “spaceship-like”, “smooth”, “gigantic”, and “breathtaking” … Continue reading Emirates Flight Sale
It’s been almost 3 months since I last shared the best of my Instagram feed with you, so that’s what I am going to do today. The pictures you’ll find in this list include, as always, pictures taken near water bodies (what can I say? I am Pisces), at hotels, and at the magical time of sunset. You’ll also find some aerial photography: pictures taken from tall buildings or from the plane. I am pleased to share that the very best of these photographs—or at least the ones my followers liked most on Instagram—are of my hometown, Bukoba. You’ll find … Continue reading Century Cinemax Mkuki House & 38 Other East African Pictures
