Zantel Zanzibar

Zantel — sometimes referred to as “Zantel Zanzibar” — is a major telecommunications company in Zanzibar and part of Tanzania’s telecom landscape.

Here’s a detailed profile of what Zantel is, how it has evolved, and what it offers.

Who Zantel Is

  • Zantel stands for Zanzibar Telecom. It was established in July 1999 as a provider of fixed-line telephony on Zanzibar, and later expanded into mobile, data, and internet services.
  • Over time, Zantel broadened its scope beyond Zanzibar — offering GSM, CDMA, fixed‑line and internet services to both island and mainland customers.

Ownership and Major Changes

  • Until 2015 the company was largely under foreign and local ownership. In that year, Millicom International Cellular acquired an 85 % stake in Zantel; the remainder stayed with the Government of Zanzibar.
  • As part of that takeover, Millicom committed to revamping Zantel’s network infrastructure — paying off outstanding debt, upgrading network sites, and expanding internet and data services.

Services and Network Coverage

  • Zantel provides a full suite of services: mobile voice and data over GSM/3G/4G, fixed-line telephony, internet (broadband and wireless), and previously CDMA.
  • The company has undersea fibre‑optic capacity which allows good internet bandwidth and connectivity for both local and international traffic.
  • After the modernisation efforts, Zantel extended its network in many regions. As of the 2020s, Zantel reportedly expanded beyond islands to cover substantial parts of the mainland.

Recent Investments and Upgrades

  • Zantel invested a substantial amount (about USD 10 million, or roughly TZS 22 billion at the time) into network modernisation, including launching 4G/LTE services and expanding capacity.
  • The upgrades included expanding the number of network sites (especially in Zanzibar), improving 3G performance in previously weak areas like Pemba, and aiming to raise overall reliability in both voice and data services.
  • As part of a promotional push, Zantel announced data‑service campaigns targeting Zanzibar and the coastal regions, aiming to attract more users after the upgrades.

What It Means for Customers

  • For someone in Zanzibar or coastal Tanzania, Zantel remains one of the primary options for mobile connectivity and internet. The upgrades have improved quality and reach.
  • Because Zantel owns fibre‑optic and undersea cable capacity, its internet and data services tend to offer better stability compared to providers reliant on more limited infrastructure — especially when 4G is available.
  • For those traveling from mainland Tanzania or visiting Zanzibar, Zantel may offer good coverage where other mainland‑focused networks struggle; but actual performance may vary depending on location and whether the area is covered by upgraded network sites.

  1. Thank you, Biche, for this list. My husband and I decided to stay at Mizingani Seafront Hotel and we greatly enjoyed the views from the dining room terrace. The breakfast buffet was fantastic! The room was spacious and comfortable, and the service was very personable.

The hotel was also very well placed relative to the ferry, Stone Town, and Forodhani Gardens, all of which were in walking distance of about 5 to 15 minutes.

Once more thanks for the recommendation!
