Tale Me a Traditional Game
A traditional game is a game that has been passed down within a community or culture over generations. Traditional games can involve physical activity, singing, movement, strategy, storytelling, or simple objects that are readily available.
One good African example is Shisima, a traditional strategy game associated with the Tiriki people of western Kenya.
It is played on a board with eight positions around the outside and a central position. Two players each have three playing pieces.
The aim is to move your pieces so that your three pieces form a straight line through the centre of the board.
Shisima
Shisima is a two-player abstract strategy game, somewhat comparable to games such as tic-tac-toe because players are trying to arrange their pieces in a particular formation. However, the movement of the pieces makes it more strategic than simply taking turns placing marks.
The traditional board can be drawn on the ground, so the game does not require an elaborate playing set. Players use small objects as their pieces, making it an accessible game for children and adults.
The basic idea is:
- Draw the Shisima board with its eight outer positions and central point.
- Each player gets three pieces.
- Players take turns moving their pieces along the lines of the board.
- The objective is to arrange all three of your pieces in a straight line passing through the centre.
- The first player to achieve the required three-piece alignment wins.
Traditional games such as Shisima are interesting because they demonstrate how play can combine entertainment with strategic thinking.
Children can develop skills such as planning ahead, recognising patterns and anticipating another player’s moves while simply playing with friends.
Shisima is also part of a much larger tradition of African games. Across Africa, traditional games have included board games, children’s games, wrestling, racing, jumping, dancing, stick-fighting and other forms of physical competition. Mancala, for example, has numerous traditional variations across the continent.

Ethiopia Games: Bub Cultural Game

The Bub Cultural Game is a traditional Ethiopian game predominantly played in the Somali Regional State, as well as in neighboring areas such as Dire Dawa and Oromia.
While the exact origins of the game in Ethiopia are not well-documented, it is believed to have similarities with the Arabic game “Shatranz” and the Somali game “Shatrant.”
In Amharic, “Bub” refers to a tabular game, indicating its strategic nature.
Bub is a cultural game enjoyed by individuals of all ages and genders.
It is commonly played during social gatherings and cultural events, serving as both entertainment and a means of fostering community bonds.
The game is typically played on a rectangular board divided into two sections, each containing a series of pits or depressions.
