The Company Behind Nice & Lovely
Nice & Lovely is a beauty brand developed in Kenya in 1995 by Interconsumer Products Limited.
In 2013, the health & beauty arm of Interconsumer Products Limited was purchased by L’Oréal, the world-famous cosmetics company.
What Company Produces Nice & Lovely Today?
The Successes of Interconsumer Products Ltd., the Company That Created Nice & Lovely
Nice & Lovely became a household name in Kenya well before it had the power of L’Oréal behind it.
At the time of the L’Oréal/Interconsumer Products Ltd. buyout, Nice & Lovely was already a leader in the Kenyan hair care market controlling about 18% of the industry.
Interconsumer Products Limited had also already expanded into other countries in the region, namely Uganda, Tanzania and Rwanda.
Who Founded Interconsumer Products Ltd., the Company That Created Nice & Lovely?
Interconsumer Products Limited was the brainchild of Paul Kinuthia, who started the company in Kariobangi, a Nairobi low-income residential estate.
The sale of the health & beauty arm of the company was a transaction worth billions of Kenyan shillings and one that made Mr. Kinuthia a Kenyan billionaire. (What a great story! 👏👏)
Now on to my original post…
For all my supposed gistyness, I like to keep it simple when it comes to moisturizing my skin.
For me, the secret has always been to use petroleum jelly.
I always have a tub of the stuff on my dresser table at home, and believe it or not, I carry a mini-tub of petroleum jelly in my handbag too (I would never think of leaving home without it!).
For most of my life, my preferred brand of petroleum jelly was Vaseline, but sometime back that changed.
Discovering Nice & Lovely Petroleum Jelly
Since I was staying at my aunt’s place, I decided to ask her if she had some in the house, which I thought was likely since she had two young infants at the time.
My aunt apologetically informed me that she didn’t have any Vaseline.
Instead, she had some Nice & Lovely Petroleum Jelly, which she was happy to let me use.
Glad that she had any petroleum jelly of any sort—my skin really likes petroleum jelly—I accepted her offer and started to moisturize right there in her room while we caught up on some girl talk.
And then I felt the Nice & Lovely on my skin.
It felt nice!
Nice & Lovely petroleum jelly was lighter than I was used to and it seemed like my skin absorbed it better.
It felt like it had all the richness of Vaseline without the thick gunky feeling that Vaseline can sometimes leave on your skin.
Also, it had a beautiful light sweet fragrance that I liked.
I had to find out more from my aunt.
My aunt told me that she had happened upon Nice & Lovely Petroleum Jelly by chance.
She too had noticed that it felt better on her skin so had since taken to buying it regularly.
She didn’t know much more about the product, but told me that it was readily available in most supermarkets in the city.
What Makes Nice & Lovely Petroleum Jelly so Different?
I figured the mineral oils were what give Nice & Lovely its lighter, more absorbent consistency.
From the label, I was also pleased to find out that Nice & Lovely Petroleum Jelly was produced in Kenya. This increased the likelihood that I would be able to find it once I got back home (though I did buy a tub for myself in Kampala, just in case).
It’s been over a decade since the first time I tried Nice & Lovely Petroleum Jelly, and quite frankly, I’ve never looked back (though Nivea‘s petroleum jelly is not bad either).
Although I think Vaseline is an excellent product too, I love the softer feel of Nice & Lovely and particularly love its fresh, soft fragrance (apparently so did my ex-boyfriend who would always tell me I smelled good right after I moisturized my hands or face. 🙂 ).
Where Can You Get Nice & Lovely Petroleum Jelly?
There is both a scented and unscented version of the product. Personally, I always buy the scented version.
Nice & Lovely Petroleum Jelly is also sold as Nice & Lovely Baby Jelly, but essentially, the products are the same (in my experience and according to the ingredients list). Whenever I am unable to find the Petroleum Jelly (which doesn’t have a picture of a baby on it) in the adult skin care section—I simply cross over to the baby section and buy the baby jelly instead—no shame to my game. 🙂 (Ok, maybe a little shame! 🙂 )
If you are a fan of petroleum jelly but would love to find a petroleum jelly that is lighter and feels more absorbable, then give Nice & Lovely Petroleum Jelly a try.
If you are not a regular user of petroleum jelly, but are looking for a moisturizer that will work wonders for your skin (protecting it from the effects of weather and exposure, while acting like a barrier that prevents the natural water loss of your skin), then Nice & Lovely Petroleum Jelly (or any petroleum jelly for that matter) might be just what you are looking for.
If you do give Nice & Lovely Petroleum Jelly a try, please let me know what you think.
Until the next time,
