Lake Mburo National Park Photos #1: The Lake Itself

Lake Mburo National Park Photos: the lake itself

The lakes of southwestern Uganda/western Rwanda share a similar quality. I don’t know what it is. Maybe it has something to do with their always being surrounded by hills. This could be Lake Kivu, Bunyonyi, or Mburo.

Which is it?

I’ll take you out of your misery: it’s Lake Mburo not far from Mbarara, Uganda.

1. Landscape & Wetland Beauty

Many photos from Lake Mburo showcase sweeping panoramas of open savanna, acacia woodland, rolling hills, and shimmering water bodies. Lake Mburo itself is a shallow freshwater lake (max depth ~5 m) set in a mosaic of grasslands and wetlands.

Photographs often highlight the serene interplay of water, light, and vegetation—the lake’s edge fringed by papyrus swamps and dotted with other lakes from the broader Lake Mburo–Nakivali Wetland System.

2. Abundant and Unique Wildlife

Wildlife photography here is incredibly rewarding.

Lake Mburo is famous as the only Ugandan park with a substantial population of impalas, alongside Burchell’s zebras, common eland, topi, oribi, defassa waterbuck, bushbuck, reedbuck, klipspringer, sitatunga, warthog, buffalo, hippo, hyena, leopard, and, occasionally, giraffe—since their introduction in 2015.

Photos frequently capture zebras in herds grazing—or “hissing and whispering” as some guides poetically describe—elaborating the park’s nickname “The Wisphers of the Wild.” Hippos and crocodiles often appear in lake-edge images, especially during boat safaris. Leopard sightings—especially on their favorite vantage “leopard rock”—are popular photographic highlights.

3. Birdwatching Marvels

The park is a birdwatcher’s dream, with over 300–350 recorded species. Photographers often focus on elusive and colourful species such as the shoebill stork, African finfoot, red-faced barbet, papyrus gonolek, African fish eagle, malachite and pied kingfishers, crowned crane (Uganda’s national bird), saddle-billed stork, herons, and more. The wetlands and acacia woodlands create perfect backdrops for vibrant bird portraits—frozen in dramatic light or serene posture.
