Carnivore Nairobi Menu 1995
Around 1995 at Carnivore Restaurant in Nairobi, the menu was centered on its signature all‑you‑can‑eat “Beast of a Feast” style meat service, and would have included a much broader range of meats than what you see there today because game meats were still legal and widely featured at that time.
The basic structure of the dining experience was already established: a starter course was served (typically soup with bread), followed by a continuous procession of grilled meats brought to your table and carved onto sizzling cast‑iron plates until you signalled you were done by lowering a white flag. Dessert and Kenyan coffee finished the meal.
Meat selections in the mid‑1990s likely included many exotic game meats, alongside traditional domestic ones. Carnivore was especially famous for these options before the game‑meat ban in Kenya took effect in 2004. Back then, the meats served spanned both familiar and wild varieties such as:
- Game meats: zebra, wildebeest, giraffe, impala, buffalo, ostrich, and possibly other antelope species (all barbecued on charcoal and carved tableside).
- Domestic meats: beef (rump steak, ribs), pork (leg, spare ribs, sausages), lamb (leg, chops), and various chicken cuts (wings, yakitori, livers/gizzards).
- Other exotic cuts: crocodile and perhaps camel were part of the rotation depending on availability.
- Sides and accompaniments: assorted salads, vegetable side dishes, rice and roast potatoes, a range of sauces to complement different meats, and warm brown bread.
- Desserts: simple sweets such as fruit desserts or ice cream, followed by Kenyan coffee to close the meal.
The presentation itself was a big part of the menu experience: meats of all types were skewered on long Maasai‑style swords and grilled over a massive charcoal pit dominating the restaurant entrance.
Servers walked the dining area continually offering cuts directly from the swords to guests until enough was eaten. This roasting and carving spectacle was as much part of the 1995 menu experience as the items themselves.
The overall feel of Carnivore in 1995 would have been richer in game varieties than today’s menu, with a stronger emphasis on wild meat alongside the familiar smoked and grilled domestic cuts.

Carnivore Nairobi/Carnivores Restaurant Nairobi
The Carnivore is an iconic Nairobi restaurant that has existed since 1980. I am pleased to say that I have had the pleasure of enjoying its offerings since the mid-eighties.
Located off Lang’ata Road, the world famous Carnivore Nairobi—it ranked 47th on Restaurant magazine’s “World’s Best 50 Restaurants” list in 2003—is a meat lover’s den where a vast selection of succulent meats are charcoal grilled and carved at your table. In their own words, they offer “a beast of a feast”.
In its heyday, Carnivore was popular for serving a slew of meat including game meat such as zebra, giraffe, and wildebeest in the popular Brazilian Rodízio style. That was until Kenya imposed a ban on the sale of game meat in 2004.
The Carnivore experience changed quite a bit after that and became a lot less exotic but still, today, eating at the Carnivore is an experience.
Starting from their welcome signature cocktail, a Dawa (it was invented at Carnivore Nairobi), a meal at The Carnivore features an all-you-can-eat meat buffet.
Today, only the meat of domestic animals such as beef, pork, lamb, and chicken, as well as farmed ostrich and crocodile meat is served.
The meat is skewered on Maasai swords, cooked on coals, and served on cast-iron plates.
The Carnivore also has a vegetarian option. You can see what that includes below.
Whatever the case, at Carnivore, you will always get delicious succulent meat, service with a great attitude, and an experience of a meal.
Simba Saloon
Adjoining the Carnivore main restaurant is the ‘Simba Saloon’ – a vibrant informal à la carte restaurant with a children’s playground.
Staying on the theme of good meat, Simba Saloon serves one of the tastiest hamburgers I have ever had in my life.
