If you’re looking for a fast-paced card game that’s easy to learn but full of clever strategy, the Red7 Card Game is well worth a look. It had been years since an offline game genuinely excited me the way childhood favorites once did, but that changed when I discovered Red7 last year. Since then, it’s become one of my favorite games to bring out for family gatherings and game nights, and I’d love to tell you why.
How Did I First Come Across the Red7 Card Game?
On a lazy Sunday in Kampala some years back, I went to visit my cousins as I usually like to do.
As soon as I walked through the door, one of my cousins said, “Biche, I’ve got to teach you how to play this game!”
I could see she wanted to teach me a card game because she had a deck of cards in her hands.
Although I’m not a big fan of games, except for Scrabble and Monopoly, I decided to humour her.
Red 7 Game: A Game with Many Moving Parts
My cousin explained to me that we were going to play a card game called Red7.
Although it’s a card game, I could see we weren’t going to play with a standard deck of cards.
Instead, the Red Seven card game has special cards made specifically for the game, sort of like Uno (remember that?). I could see that the cards in my cousin’s hands had numbers, colors and words written along the side.
My cousin began to explain the card game rules to me.
She began to say something complicated about how certain colors trumped others and that there were cards to be held in your hands and others to be placed in front of you.
She also mentioned something about being able to change the rules of the game and making sure you were always winning at the end of your turn.
Sounds confusing? It sure did to me.
I stopped my cousin mid-explanation and told her that I simply couldn’t understand what she was telling me.
Instead, I suggested that we begin to play the game and then she could explain as we went along.
The Red7 Card Game is a compact strategy card game that proves you do not need a large game board or dozens of pieces to create a memorable gaming experience. Designed by Carl Chudyk and Chris Cieslik, Red7 stands out because the rules of the game can change from one turn to the next. That simple idea creates a surprisingly deep game that rewards planning, adaptability, and quick thinking.
Red7 is designed for 2 to 4 players, typically takes 5 to 15 minutes to play, and is generally recommended for players aged 9 and older. Its short playing time makes it an excellent choice for family game nights, lunch breaks, or as a warm-up before a longer tabletop game.
The game uses a deck of 49 cards, with cards numbered 1 through 7 in each of the seven rainbow colors: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. Every color represents a different rule for determining who is currently winning the game. The round begins under the red rule, where the player with the highest card is winning. During your turn, however, you can play a card to your personal display, known as your palette, discard a card to change the current rule, or do both. The catch is that you must be winning according to the active rule when your turn ends. If you are not, you are eliminated from the round.
