Best Pork Joints in Kampala

I have been thinking for quite a while now about writing a post on the best pork joints in Kampala.

I am still doing my research (well, I was before lockdown began) so that I can write you the mother of all authoritative posts on the subject.

Before then, though, I think one of the best places to eat pork in Kampala is Kyadondo Rugby Club.

If you haven’t been, check it out as soon as you get a chance and come back here to let me know what you thought.

Otherwise, leave me a comment below telling me what you think is the best pork joint in Kampala, and I will be sure to try it as I continue my research.

Update Feb ’22: This post was originally about Bamboo Nest in Bugolobi, but it no longer exists. In its place, in Bugolobi, is a shopping arcade with a variety of shops.

Hi, everyone!

Today, I would like to tell you about a remake of a classic Kampala oldie-but-goodie. Most of you, if you’ve ever been to Kampala, may have heard of Bamboo Nest.

Located in Bugolobi, a Kampala neighborhood where a lot of young (and not so young) people live, a neighborhood which lies between town and many other residential neighborhoods, Bamboo Nest for the longest time was the place to meet up with friends or to stop for a drink on your way home.

From the time that I learned of its existence (some time in the late ’90s) up to the mid ’00s, Bamboo Nest had always been hot, hot, hot.

It was always the perfect place to go to for food such as grilled pork, goat, and fish as well as, of course, ‘a swallow‘, after all it was one of the nearest pork joints near me. 🙂

  1. Hi, i am a huge fun of the old Bamboo and you are right the new one just doesnt do it for me!

I am no sure about the thieving waiters but in bars you need to watch your bill carefully.

    I totally love your blog

  2. Hi Fatso,

Welcome to ChickAboutTown! I am glad that you love my blog. I hope to keep the posts coming. 🙂

What is it that doesn’t hit the spot for you about the new Bambu?

I look forward to hearing what you have to say.

  3. The closest i have gotten to the New Bamboo is the parking lot outside the building. We stopped by to pick up some Pork. I can say the pork was not outstanding (this i say in retrospect after tasting some Wicked Pork from Ntinda). It is strange but i didn’t really think the Old Bamboo served anything But Pork and the occassional Chicken. Well this seals it for me, I shall just start looking for the Pork hang from which the aforementioned Pork was obtained and revisit Bambo later in life and only if i must (considering they may not only bolt with my cash but some pieces of my pork as well!

  4. Hi Julian,

Nice to see you on ChickAboutTown! 🙂

Where was this pork joint in Ntinda? For me, nothing is yet to top the pork at Rise and Shine. Might that be it? The pork at Iguana is also pretty hot!

  5. I just moved into the neighbourhood, so I don’t know the old place. But I have the idea this’ll be one of my steady haunts. Nice set up, reasonable pork, laid back crowd and what’s best: its at crawling distance. If they’d just change the plastic tables and chairs and serve a good Kenyan kachumbari with the pork…

    1. Hi Ndugu Mzungu,

      Welcome to ChickAboutTown!

So you made it to Uganda by way of Kenya (in reference to your comment about the kachumbari)? 🙂 Don’t worry, eventually you will get used to the pork the way it’s served in Kampala. After eating choma in Kenya for a long time, I used to crave meat with ugali and kachumbari. After some time in Uganda, grilled meat without avocado, cassava, and/or steamed bananas no longer hit the spot. Now, in Dar, at times I crave chips mayai. Just hang in there. 🙂

About the old Bamboo, I think it should still be there (at least it was a year ago). It’s the joint near the parking lot next to Payless Supermarket. Do you get the one I am meaning?

  6. Hi Namakolo,

    Welcome to ChickAboutTown!

That’s sad if that’s so. It really kills the pleasure of going out! Thanks for you feedback.
