I can still remember the day when I first became aware of the existence of Mr Price Home Kenya.

The year was 2007.

I was driving along Ngong Road in Nairobi near Prestige Plaza.

I looked up to see a huge banner announcing the opening of a home furnishing store called Mr Price Home Kenya at the Westgate Centre in Westlands.

The idea of a home furnishing store sounded interesting to me. I made a mental note to check out the store the next time I was in its vicinity.

A Second Mr Price Home Nairobi Experience Later That Day

That same evening, I returned home to an excited housemate who had spent the afternoon in the new store buying household goods for an apartment that she would be moving to soon.

As soon as I got home, she couldn’t wait to show me what she had purchased.

Within minutes, I found myself seated on her bed as she pulled her new belongings out of bags that she had stuffed under her bed for safe keeping.

Out of these bags, she pulled gorgeous cushions made out of rich fabrics in the most delicious colors.

She showed me hip, playful wine glasses that were just perfect for the young 20-something professional woman that she was.

She pulled out candles, dried flowers, and all manner of beautiful knickknacks that would turn her new apartment into a beautiful and tasteful home.

With the added incentive of actually seeing what Mr Price Kenya had to offer, I made yet another mental note to visit the store ASAP!

My, oh my, was I in for a treat!

In this large store, I was greeted first by beautiful bedding, complete with perfectly-made beds to let you see just how great this bedding would look in your own home. (This is when I first spotted the mattress pads that I wrote about in this post.)

While perusing the store that day, I saw gorgeous rugs and glasses of all variety.

I saw beautiful ready-made curtains, dried flowers, toilet mats, towels, and laundry baskets.

Basically, I saw everything that you could possible ever think of needing in your home. (Well, that’s not quite true. I didn’t see any hard furniture such as beds or couches or tables. Still, the range of household items that I saw at Mr Price Home was pretty exhaustive.)READ ALSO: 100 Most Influential Young Kenyans

As I walked around taking everything in, I nostalgically began to think back to when I first started living on my own in Nairobi and how much I’d have loved for such a store to be open at the time.

  1. sorry to ask this but I left Nairobi in the nineties after high school; where does everyone buy nice couches and furniture?

Biche, just love your blog–its like therapy!! but in a way you have made wary coz now I think of how hard it must to meet friends in Nairobi–just when i thought making friends in the states is a task in and of itself.

    1. Hi Madchen,

Welcome to ChickAboutTown! I am sorry it’s taken me this long to respond to your comment but I am hoping it’s better late than never. 🙂

I bought my couches at Odds & Ends after looking a long time for something that fit my personality, pocket, and living space. I’ll let others tell you where they bought their furniture from to give you a real picture of what “everyone” does in Nairobi. (Anyone willing to share?)

I am glad you enjoy my blog. I hope to see more of you around here. Don’t worry about making friends in Nairobi; it’s really not that hard, especially if you are Kenyan (I think). Are you?

      Thanks for your comment.

  2. I have never been to a Mr. Price store and I see them all the time. You have peaked my curiousity. I love shopping for household stuff and can’t wait.

  3. Hi Biche

I am glad to see that the expansion of the Mr Price footprint in Africa has been so well received.

As a new Franchise store in Dar Es Salaam i was pleasently surprised by the extent of local support.
We have a well travelled and sophisticated public that appreciate the brand and great value. Even citizens who have not travelled out of Tanzania marvel at our products when they arrive in Dar and give us extremely positive feedback on the great range, quality and affordability of the goods.

The great shopping experience and returns /refunds policy also seem to be a factor that encourages our public to continue to shop with us.

Initial perceptions that fashion and fashionable home furnishings are unaffordable seem to be waning – affordable fashion and great value is indeed the cornerstone on which the brand has been built.

Please say hello when you come in next.

Congratulations and best wishes on a great column.

    1. Hi Sudhir,

      Welcome to ChickAboutTown!

Thank you for your feedback on my post and blog. I will be sure to stop by one of these days when I visit your store at Mlimani City!

      Wishing you all the best,
      Biche

  4. May i just say how lovely your blog is. I have always
always wanted to have a blog!!

I have happened to go to the Mr. Price both at West gate and Junction. The Junction store has really helped
when i need a last minute top like to a function,
I must admit i have not bought any household items
but they definitely have a few good pieces!

    1. Hi Nash,

      Welcome to ChickAboutTown!

Thanks for all the kudos. What stops you from starting a blog of your own? I encourage you wholeheartedly. And when you do, please send me a link so I can be one of your first readers. You can do it! 🙂

Thanks for sharing your feedback about Mr. Price stores. I’ve never bought clothes from Mr. Price, but will pay closer attention from now on.

Wishing you all the best (and courage to start that blog :-)),
      Biche

  5. Thanks for your posting. My first experience with Mr. Price was in Arusha, Tanzania in 2004 where there is a small relatively poorly run supermarket. I have been living in Nairobi, Kenya for a year now and have seen many Mr. Price locations though never had much desire to visit because of my previous experiences. I have recently heard a lot of talk from both the expats and Kenyans and must admit I am curious. I have only heard good things about Mr. Price Home but there are rumors circulating that although the price and styles at the clothing stores are right, that the quality is still relatively poor and garments (especially pants) don’t last more than a few months.
I just got a new job and am online looking for clothing shops to get some new work cloths. When they open later today, I expect to visit Mr. Price on Moi Ave to find out what I think for myself. Thanks for your info and maybe if I get a minute I will let you know what I think after my visit.

    1. Hi Daniel,

Welcome to ChickAboutTown! Thanks for your feedback.

Did you ever visit Mr. Price as you expected to? I would love to hear what you thought if you did.

I look forward to hearing more from you soon.

      Biche

  6. Hi Veronica,

    Welcome to ChickAboutTown!

I am not sure who you are addressing your comment to, but in case it’s Mr Price, then I hope someone from there sees it and gets in touch with you. Good luck with that!

    Biche

  7. Hello, I have read somewhere that there are Mr. Price branches that deal with clothing while others deal with home decor. Which are the branches dealing with clothing?

    1. Hello Bert,

      Welcome to Chick About Town!

The branches that deal with home décor are called MRP Home. The ones that deal with clothing are simply MRP.

      I hope that is helpful.

      Biche
