In my mother’s language, Runyankore, there is a saying which translates roughly to “a name bewitches its owner”, meaning that a name causes someone or something to be a certain way.

When I visited Mediterraneo Kampala, Uganda, I was immediately reminded of this saying.

Just as its namesake restaurants in Dar es Salaam and Nairobi, Mediterraneo Kampala was a feast for the eyes. The wines were great and the menu to die for. The actual food though, just like at Mediterraneo Dar es Salaam, left something to be desired.

Mediterraneo Kampala is located at the Villa Kololo boutique hotel (Booking.com rating: 8.2/10 – “Very Good”) off Acacia Avenue.

Find out more about, or book your stay at, Villa Kololo here.

I first wrote the caption to the picture above many years ago, when I first visited Mediterraneo restaurant, when my aunt and uncle treated me to a belated birthday dinner.

Over the years, I have been to Mediterraneo again and again, because it is my father’s favourite restaurant in Kampala.

Personally, while I think it’s a good restaurant, with particularly good ambiance, I often find something lacking in the meals I order, which keeps the dishes I am served from being perfect.

Mediterraneo has recently undergone a makeover and moved elsewhere at Villa Kololo: closer to the inside parking lot.

I recently went to check out the changes at Mediterraneo, and I have to say that I like what it has become.

Whereas the parking is now a little more problematic than it used to be, its new location and décor, while remaining very similar to what it used to be, is brighter and more modern. I quite enjoy the changes that have taken place.

Mediterraneo is arguably the best Italian restaurant in Kampala, but its sister restaurant Cantine Divino gives it a good run for its money.

Whenever I dine at Mediterraneo, I usually make sure to have a three-course meal, because the starters are delicate and delightful and the desserts are not to be missed.

To make sure I can handle all that food, I plan my meal carefully and usually share a dessert or two with everyone at the table so that we all get a sweet finish to our meal but nothing too heavy.

So for instance, to begin with, I might have the Carpaccio di Speck dell’Alto Adige con Parmigiano e Rucola all’Aceto Balsamico, with its salty cured meat goodness and peppery rocket leaves.

For a main, I would normally go for a juicy steak or seafood.

For dessert, I’ll give it a go with anything. I am yet to have a bad dessert at Mediterraneo.

My brother claims that the pizzas at Mediterraneo are the best in Kampala.

Hmmm….although I don’t normally order pizza when I am fine dining, I did so the last time I was at Mediterraneo just so I could tell you what I thought.

Personally, although the pizzas at Mediterraneo are good, I still prefer the pizzas at Olives in Naguru despite the toppings not being typically Italian.

Whereas I am sure the pizzas at Olives will always taste great without any addition, at Mediterraneo, I first had to add salt to my pizza, then I had to ask for garlic oil to add to my pizza to make it pop with deliciousness in my mouth.

Perfectly Cooked Salmon at the Fairway Hotel Nairobi, Kenya

Perfectly Cooked Salmon at the Fairview Hotel, Nairobi

This grilled salmon at the Mukutan Garden Café at the Fairview Hotel in Nairobi remains firmly impressed in my mind and on my palette for its perfection and flavor. Perfectly flaky and fresh with its seasoning of dill. It was the prefect dish to have in the restaurant’s fresh green gardens.
