iSafari KQ Staff Travel

iSafari is Kenya Airways’ Staff Travel Management System — a secure online platform where current and retired Kenya Airways (KQ) staff can log in to manage airline travel benefits that come with working for the carrier.

It’s essentially the digital tool Kenya Airways uses to organise and issue rebate travel and duty travel bookings for employees and eligible retirees.

What iSafari Does

Flight bookings for staff: Active and retired staff use iSafari to apply for rebate tickets and duty travel on KQ flights. Duty travel is usually official travel needed for work, while rebate travel lets staff fly at deeply discounted or subsidised rates.
Travel categories and priorities: When staff apply for travel, the system uses priority categories set by the airline (based on staff grade and reason for travel) to decide who gets seats first — especially on flights that are full.
Booking tools and options: Staff can add their personal details, manage bookings, request group travel with colleagues, and in some cases access special fare categories like ZED (Zonal Employee Discount) or MYID (reduced-fare agreements used with other airlines).
Travel on partner airlines: If travel needs to be booked on airlines outside Kenya Airways’ own network, iSafari can issue letters or authorization documentation required by those carriers.
Retiree access: Employees who have left KQ but are still eligible for travel benefits can register on iSafari with support from HR and log in to use their travel privileges.

How Staff Use It

To use iSafari, staff log in with a staff number and password.

First-time users go through a simple setup process to get their credentials.

Once logged in, they can access the booking menus, check eligibility, apply for flights, and follow up on the status of their travel requests.

Important Points About Staff Travel

Priority is based on airline rules: Even with travel privileges, staff travel is subject to seat availability and priority settings in the system — and commercially paying passengers always come first.
Travel rules apply: The airline has policies on dress code, conduct, and how staff should behave when travelling on these tickets, because staff travel often runs alongside regular passengers.

In short, iSafari is the back-end travel portal that Kenya Airways employees use to take advantage of travel benefits the company provides. It brings together application, booking, and approval processes into one place, making it easier for staff and retirees to manage their travel entitlements.

On a random day in February, I was unexpectedly offered the opportunity to visit Addis Ababa, the capital city of Ethiopia.

I had not been to Addis since I was a teen, and frankly, I knew I would have a great time visiting this historically rich city for more reasons than one (and yes, by that, I am referring to my much-written-about love for Ethiopian food 🙂 ).

Once my travel party had confirmed its plans in terms of number of travelers and dates, we quickly set off to make travel arrangements.

The obvious airline to use from Dar es Salaam was Ethiopian Airlines.

A member of my travel party made our flight bookings, while I and someone else headed to the local Ethiopian Airlines office to pay for our tickets, well within the deadline given to us by the airline.

Nonetheless, we were rudely informed, without much explanation, that our reservation had been canceled and our seats given away.

Mind you, this we were told only three days before our expected date of departure.

My travel buddies, although a little miffed, were willing to discuss a  little further with the airline to see what could be done for us to get our seats back.

I, on the other hand, was completely flabbergasted and wanted nothing more to do with Ethiopian Airlines.

It was bad enough that we had lost our seats for no reason, but even more unacceptable to me was how rudely and dismissively we were treated by the Ethiopian Airlines agent who had canceled our booking.

I suggested, instead, that we try another alternative.

I was pretty sure that Kenya Airways, too, flew between Dar es Salaam and Addis Ababa, and that with Kenya Airways, we’d be sure to receive much better service.

This is how, the following day, one of my travel buddies visited the Kenya Airways office in Dar es Salaam to find out more.

Unfortunately, as is often the case with customer service in Tanzania, he was given information that was neither helpful nor very clear.

Gosh! I was fed up!

Something needed to be done!

And so, I decided to take action.

    Great review on KQ.

Despite some very bad reviews on the courier I have read elsewhere, Kenya Airways still remain my favourite, but they must create a deliberate effort to improve their service delivery to customers if the are really ‘the pride of Africa’.

    1. Hi Kainvestor,

Thanks for the kudos! It’s nice to find someone else who, like me, thinks highly of KQ. ๐Ÿ™‚ Still, I guess there must be some truth to all the negative stories that other people share – there can’t be all that smoke without any fire. ๐Ÿ™‚ I hope someone from KQ is reading and that they take your advice to heart.

      Thanks for your feedback.

  2. Oh noooooooooooo! never KQ again, sorry! they
are filthy – we (a party of 13) got on one flight that had dirty blankets from previous passengers which were still
on the seats (yuck!) – we hated it. When we got
to Nairobi all 19 pieces of luggage were missing
2 were found after 2 hours the rest had to be
retrieved the next day – and the baby carrier just
arrived almost 8 months later at my doorstep 8000
mails away from Kenya. No thanks!

    1. Hi insp2,

      Welcome to ChickAboutTown!

Wow, that sounds like one heck of a bad experience. You mention the flight was to Nairobi, where was it from? Sorry! I can see why you won’t be giving KQ another chance.

      Thanks for sharing.

    Keep writing..I enjoy your blog..

    1. Hi Nitafika (I love the name of your blog by the way!),

Welcome to ChickAboutTown! You say you’ve been reading for a while but have never commented? Well, it’s always a pleasure to finally interact with one of my readers through a comment. Karibu sana! ๐Ÿ™‚

Ah, so you’ve also had good experiences with KQ? I am pleased to know. Readers, take note! There are not only KQ sob stories out there.
