There seems to be a lot of debate about what the fuel consumption of a Toyota Vitz with a 1000 cc engine is–that might be because there are several models of the Vitz with this size engine.
I have seen figures ranging from 8.9 km/L to 21.5 km/L depending on the state of the car, what fuel is used, and how the car is driven.
Whatever the case, the consensus seems to be that the 1300 cc engine in a Vitz offers better fuel economy.

The Toyota Vitz 1.0L vs 1.3L comparison is more interesting than it first appears. Both engines are economical, but the 1.3L gives you a noticeable advantage in power and everyday drivability, while the 1.0L is particularly attractive if keeping fuel consumption and running costs as low as possible is the priority.
One important point is that Vitz specifications vary by generation and year.
A second-generation Vitz, for example, used the 1.0L 1KR-FE and 1.3L 2SZ-FE, while the third-generation 1.3L moved to the newer 1NR-FE engine.

The second-generation 1.0L 1KR-FE produces about 71 hp and 94 Nm, while its 1.3L 2SZ-FE counterpart produces about 87 hp and 116 Nm.
The later third-generation 1.3L is considerably more powerful. Its 1NR-FE produces 95 hp at 6,000 rpm, compared with the 1.0L 1KR-FE’s roughly 69–71 hp depending on specification.
The biggest Toyota Vitz 1000cc vs 1300cc difference: torque
This is where you are likely to notice the 1.3L.
The older 1.3L 2SZ-FE produces 116 Nm, compared with 94 Nm from the 1.0L 1KR-FE.
That extra torque makes the 1.3L feel less strained when:
- Carrying several passengers
- Driving uphill
- Overtaking
- Accelerating onto a busy road
- Running the air conditioner
- Driving outside the city
- Carrying luggage
The difference isn’t that the 1.0L is incapable.
The Vitz is a relatively small and light car, so the 1.0L can move it quite adequately. But when the car is loaded, the 1.3L has more reserve power.

This is where things get interesting because the difference isn’t necessarily as large as you might expect.
For the second-generation Vitz, Toyota quoted approximately:
- 1.0L 2WD: 22.0 km/L
- 1.3L 2WD: 19.6 km/L
- 1.3L 4WD: 16.0 km/L
These figures were from Japan’s older 10·15 test cycle.
Toyota subsequently improved the engines and control systems. A 2009 update brought the official figures to 22.5 km/L for the 1.0L and 20.0 km/L for the 1.3L 2WD under the same Japanese testing system.
So, broadly speaking, the older 1.0L has an official advantage of around 2–2.5 km/L over the comparable 1.3L.
But that doesn’t mean you will necessarily see exactly that difference on Tanzanian roads.
